EVENT:
Atheists, agnostics, and nonbelievers often hide their lack of faith due to fear of being ostracized and discriminated against. However, with upwards of 25% of Americans reporting that they do not identify with a belief system, this is a real population that requires attention. Nonbelievers often report difficulty finding counselors who meet their unique needs and who make them feel respected. In this talk, participants will learn about barriers nonbelievers face in accessing care and steps professionals can take toward helping them get the services they need.
The workshop is designed to help participants:
1. Distinguish specific concerns nonbelievers have expressed about past experiences in therapy.
2. Identify barriers nonbelievers face in accessing care.
3. Recognize ways to improve treatment outcomes for nonbelievers.
PRESENTER:
Candace R. M. Gorham MA, LCMHCS is a licensed professional mental health counselor. She is a former ordained minister turned atheist activist, researcher, and writer on issues related to religion and the African-American community. She is a member of the African American Humanist advisory board, The Secular Therapist Project, The Clergy Project, and the Secular Student Alliance Speaker’s Bureau.
